Paradox

Here’s something weird I’m finding about book blogging – I’m reading books for a whole lot more reasons than I used to. Life was simple then:

READ WHILE AUTHOR_BOOK_X=GOOD THEN
.....X=X+1
.....GOTO READ
ELSE STOP

Now I’ve got a whole bunch more uncertainty about what to do when BOOK_X != GOOD.

Sometimes I just wonder what I’m missing. To be honest, I’m not the world’s pickiest reader. My bar just isn’t that high. So if I’m not liking something that the rest of the Romancelandia is raving over then… huh? I wonder, am I missing something? Is it me? What time of the month is it? (yes, that matters. Some months.) Did I manage to pick up the one mediocre book and now I’m missing out on the fabulous ones? Wha..??

Which leads to some strange behavior, like

READ WHILE AUTHOR_BOOK_X=GOOD THEN
.....X=X+1
.....GOTO READ
ELSE IF AUTHOR_BOOK_X=BAD THEN
.....ANALYZE AUTHOR_BOOK_X
.....IF AUTHOR_BOOK_X=CHANGED_MIND THEN
..........X=X+1
..........GOTO READ
.....IF AUTHOR_BOOK_X=STILLBAD THEN
..........X=X+1
..........READ AUTHOR_BOOK_X
..........INCREMENT TOLERANCE_FOR_CRAP
..........INCREMENT MINDFUCKAGE
..........IF TOLERANCE_FOR_CRAP<MAX AND MINDFUCKAGE<MAX
...............GOTO ANALYZE
..........ELSE
...............SET WTF=TRUE
...............STOP

Yes, I know. I don't care, it's my blog and I'll geek out if I want to.

Bottom line is, I'm reading a lot more books that I don't like in attempts to figure out exactly a) what it is I don't like; b) what it is everyone else likes, and/or c)wtf is wrong with you people me??

Lora Leigh review to follow. First I might need to read one more book though.

I love your creative post! I think it's totally great to not like what others are liking (is a certain Blood world in that group?) I think it gives you more credibility. Go for it.

I find my habits being altered by the group, too. Sometimes for good, sometimes not. I'm exposed to more good books, but I end up reading some bad.

This is one of the reasons why I am not a good book blogger, my love.

And now I have an earworm. "You would geek too if it happened to you!"

geek if I want to, geek if I want to, GEEEEEEEK if I want to...

In all seriousness though, I feel like I'm growing a bit as a reader through this blog and thinking more explicitly about what makes a good (for me) book and what puts an author on my Never Again list.

And CJ, it's not that I'm unable to buck a trend (cf, Suzanne Brockmann), but I really am interested to know why people whose opinions I respect LIKE something if I think it's dreck. Because I respect their (your, for example) opinion, I'm willing to consider the fact that I might have overlooked something.

But if I still think it's awful?

SET WTF=TRUE.

Not liking Suzanne Brockmann seems more like a page fault to me. ;-)

It's not even my blog and I'll geek if I want to!

Nicola, I think I love you. Or at least your mad coding skillz.

Jane, you know I love you too. I didn't realize you blogged -- now I have to check it out!
